Training update

Hi all,
Welcome to our training update page. Today is the 26th June 2010 and training has begun. This week is this first full week of riding i.e. ride Tues, Thurs, Sat and Sun. Total kms after tomorrow will probably be around 150kms. Why did anyone decide to start training in this weather. It is so cold that the whales have started to come to Warrnambool for the annual birthing. It is cold, wet and windy. Lets hope the weather starts to improve from here on in. Otherwise training is going to be indoors on the couch watching videos of Tour De France.

  1. Well another ride done for today. I went out at 0600 and had thought taking photos might be a good idea. Unfortunately the only thing you could see was blackness, Its dark and cold. I thought I would see some other riders out but not one until I was nearly home. I could only guess that the rest were safely tucked up in bed. It was FREEZING this morning and not helped by me not wearing a thermal top. Oh well they say "no pain no gain". I think this is going to be a long haul training. I have already suggested to my colleagues that planning a ride at this time of year was not the smartest thing they have done.

  2. Sadly i have succumbed to the dreaded flu which has hit most of my family. Training is now on hold until i kick this bug. I hope Jason is able to keep up the team on the training track. I found some interesting advice on the net for avoiding the flu:
    don't eat pork...... swine flu
    don't eat chicken......bird flu
    don't eat beef...... mad cow
    don't eat eggs......salmonella
don't eat fish...heavy metal poisons in their water
don't eat fruit and veggies....insecticides and herbicides
I believe that leaves Chocolate and ice cream!!!!!!!!
    Remember - - - 'STRESSED'
    spelled backwards! is
    'DESSERTS'
Let me know if these tips help:)

  3. Yeah i got back out on the bike for the first time this week. It was a great ride even though it was cold but no wind and no rain (yeah). The roads are still muddy and wet so after every ride i look a bit like a mountain biker on a wet day in the mud. Hopefully this is the start of getting some regular rides in. I just found out Jason has a new bike so I think I will be sitting on his wheel for most of the big ride. Well another ride tomorrow if the weather holds.
    Quick Joke:
    Q. What is the hardest part of learning to ride a bike?

    A. The pavement.

  4. A great joke sent to me from Derek Borg one of the Sydney riders. For anyone who bike rides or lives with a bike rider you will get a laugh out of this.

  5. Jason and i have finally got serious with the training riding today about 75kms. We both felt wrecked after it not, surprising given Jason played a game of football yesterday. Jason hasn 't played regular footy for years so when he got the call up I don't think he was fully prepared still he got BOG which isn't bad for an old fella.

  6. Just a quick update on training this week so far. I have managed 2 rides Tuesday and Thursday so hopefully this week will be the start of something regular and not to get sick again. I have been watching highlights of the Tour De France for inspiration although seeing all those crashes is not that inspiring. Here's hoping the weather will get warmer from here on in:)

  7. I went out today with 7 other riders and we were blown all over the road. I think the bad weather from Perth has hit Warrnambool. Wind gusts were extremely strong making it very difficult to keep upright. Now its pouring outside so happy to be home.

  8. I went out yesterday and similar to Sunday the wind was blowing a treat. The only treat was when it was behind me but the rest of the ride was just a hard slog. Oh well keep telling myself "no pain no gain". No more training this week as i have to do some work in Melbourne so hopefully can get on the bike on the weekend weather permitting.

  9. Quick update. Had my first ride in over a week. It went well although still struggling to breathe properly so won't be making any major efforts on the track. Happy to be finalling rolling the legs over anyways:)

  10. Yes i finally got another ride in today despite the gale force winds and rain. I went out with K Kelly and Jason Hill who both left me in no doubt i need to do more riding. Jason in his wisdom suggested we do a few more kms and that seemed like a good idea until the rain and wind picked up. I'm sure they were all laughing as i fell further back. As they say what won't kill you will only make you stronger. Ha

  11. Due to family committments no riding this week on the road but i have put in some time on an exercise bike. Not a good look but i hope it helps. We are only 31 days to go. Looking forward to it (and a little bit anxious).

  12. My first ride back on the road. Jason and I rode to Port Campbell and yes once again Jason "smashed" me with his fitness. It was a great day out and we clocked 160kms. Longest ride i have done in a long while and trust me my legs are feeling it. Jason looked as fresh as the start of the ride so i think his training is well on track. Oh well tomorrow i hope to do 50kms and that will be it again for a little while.

  13. There is definitely a theme emerging as far as my training goes (not much training). This week we have had torrential downpours resulting in flash flooding. Suffice to say i haven't been out all week except today i rode to Hopkins Falls to watch the impressive power of water surging over the falls. Well worth a look for anyone who hasn't been out there.

  14. Well we have just completed a weekend of training. Despite ongoing rain and wind I have managed to get 90kms both days. Jason is back from the snow and looking like he hasn't lost any form on the bike.

  15. Jason and I had a good ride today. For a change sun was shining. I am a little worried that Hilly is trying to dislodge me from the bike as we were descending fast down a hill behind Hilly when he started slowing before the corner. I thought he was being cautious but no infact he had ridden this road before and knew the road had broken up at the bottom. Thanks Hilly for the warning.
We rode to Tower Hill and saw a kangaroo to one side of the road. Pretty cool and beats riding in the city. We were attacked by magpies today. Final score magpies 3 us 0. I had one magpie actually peck me through the helmet. They give you such a fright when out of the blue you hear them snapping their beaks. Poor Hilly also got a fly or a bee in the eye as we were riding along thankfully no injuries sustained. Oh well that's it for the long rides now. I will just be trying to roll the legs over from now until we go. Jason has a big weekend planned for next weekend with a ride to Dunkeld. I hope the weather holds up.

  16. I managed to get in a quick 30kms yesterday before the rain but it was cold and a little windy. I am hopeful now we can start to taper although i never really got to the peak of training anyway. Wish us luck. Less than 2 weeks to go now.

  17. Well another weekend over. The last of the big rides. I managed 70kms with a bunch that were heading to Apollo Bay. I was happy with that and turned back at Nullaware. No point in over doing it now.
